Established in 2016 by Richard and Anita Funk, this high-density vineyard is planted with 1815 vines per acre. Located at the corner of Sunnyside and Winesap Roads, the elevation is 875 feet, noticeably cooler than the Funk Estate Vineyard which is located less than a mile away. Stones Speak Vineyard is planted with five acres of Syrah, two acres of Tempranillo and one acre of Viognier.
The vines are trained and trellised using a modified Gobelet system. The decision to use this training style took into consideration the cooler site, which is more susceptible to winter damage and the fact that Tempranillo and Viognier are more sensitive to extreme cold temperatures.
Naturally one might ask: why go through all this extra expense and effort to grow in the rocks? Well, the answer is simple…The Rocks District provides an extraordinary medium that motivates and inspires our liquid art form. The risks are real and our art requires that we take this risk. The reward? We love to share the funky wines grown in The Rocks District. We look forward to sharing wines from this vineyard with you in 2020. The anticipation is real!
