Saviah Cellars, formed in 2000 in the Walla Walla Valley of southeastern Washington, is committed to crafting extraordinary wines that combine viticultural excellence with traditional winemaking techniques. The winery strives to produce rich, artfully balanced wines showcasing the terroir and varietal characteristics that reflect the growing sites, unique soils and climate of the Walla Walla and Columbia Valleys.

In 2001, the Funks formed a special relationship with the Brown family, who have farmed in the Walla Walla Valley for generations, to establish a world-class estate vineyard program. Anna Marie Vineyard was planted in 2001 followed by McClellan Estate Vineyard in 2003, both of which are the primary sources for our Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot.

Watermill Estate Vineyard was planted in 2005 and in 2007 we began cultivating the Funk Estate Vineyard. Both vineyards are located in the southern end of the Walla Walla Valley on the alluvial soils of the ancient Walla Walla River bed, commonly referred to as “The Rocks District”. These sites are planted mostly with Syrah with smaller blocks of Mourvedre, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Tempranillo. This was followed by Dugger Creek Vineyard in 2009 which includes Grenache, Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc.

In 2016, we planted Stones Speak Vineyard in The Rocks District with Tempranillo, Syrah, and Viognier.

Richard Funk, Owner & Winemaker

Richard Funk, Owner & Winemaker

Rich moved to Walla Walla, Washington in 1991 with a degree in Microbiology from Montana State University and he quickly developed an interest in the small, still to be discovered wine industry in this quiet southeastern Washington town.

His science background complements his winemaking approach and his understanding of the critical processes involved in making exceptional wine. Rich also has a keen interest in soil science and has analyzed the soils of the Walla Walla valley extensively allowing him to understand the important relationship between fruit quality and terroir.

Rich is known for a great sense of humor and enjoys the outdoors and spending time with his family. In the spring you may find him searching the Blue Mountains near Walla Walla for the elusive morel mushroom and in the fall he traverses the backcountry of Oregon and Montana in search of the equally elusive wapiti and Blue Mountain boletus mushrooms.
