Vineyard Sources in
The Rocks District

Established in 1988 as the fifth winery in the Walla Walla Valley by the founding families of the original Seven Hills Vineyard (now named the Founding Blocks at SHW Estate Vineyard). Our founders were determined in the belief that the soils and climate of this region could produce wines of international renown. Our commitment to the Walla Walla Valley is enduring, with vineyard designated Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from Seven Hills Vineyard produced since vintage 1988. As one of the first producers of Syrah in the Valley, we look forward to once again making Rhone red wines from the new Rocks District blocks at SHW Estate Vineyard in vintage 2020.

The heart of our wine portfolio is in the Walla Walla Valley, but the excellent grapes of Red Mountain and the greater Columbia Valley are less than 70 miles away! We are privileged to make a vineyard designated wine from Ciel du Cheval Vineyard, and rely on the Columbia Valley for grapes to create delicious Sauvignon Blanc and our dry Rosé of Cabernet Franc.

It has been quite a journey from the fruit processing building where we started, to our current home in the historic Whitehouse Crawford Building in downtown Walla Walla. Built in 1904 to provide lumber, fixtures and furniture for a booming economy, it was repurposed and renovated in 1999 to house the Whitehouse Crawford restaurant and Seven Hills Winery. Our tasting room provides a view into the temperature controlled, sky-lit barrel room. Our wines quietly age there under massive old growth timber beams, where in a previous century skilled craftsmen were hard at work helping to build the town of Walla Walla itself. We invite you to visit for a tasting and building tour. Open Daily.

Bobby Richardson, Winemaker

Bobby Richardson, Winemaker

People often fall into one of two groups: beer lovers or wine lovers. For Bobby Richards, it was his role as brewmaster for the fermentation science club at Oregon State University that eventually led him to a career as a winemaker. Bobby was raised in Albany, Oregon, surrounded by the vines of the Willamette Valley. But it wasn’t until 2008 when the fermentation science club received one ton of Syrah grapes, that Bobby was introduced to winemaking.

Interested in diversifying the varietals he was working with, Bobby and his wife, Maddie, relocated to Washington State where Bobby became the harvest intern at Tranche Cellars. There he worked with Bordeaux, Rhone, and Italian varietals, as well as Chardonnay. In 2013, Bobby joined Seven Hills as an
intern under Founder Casey McClellan. He spent the next seven years working with Casey to learn every role within the cellar and vineyard. While working with Seven Hills, Bobby earned his Masters at UC Davis in Enology and Viticulture. Upon Casey’s retirement in 2021, Bobby was the obvious choice to carry on the vision of the McClellan family as Head Winemaker.
